S.D.S. - Concept Phase 1 Trainer

The S.D.S.- concept instructor training program forms the base for establishing a qualified net of S.D.S.-concept trainers. The technical competence required to teach is built during weekend seminars. The phase 1 trainer- and instructor program qualifies the graduate to teach the S.D.S-concept in seminars, courses or regular individual training sessions.

These seminars are ideal for martial artists who want to bolster their tool-assisted self defense training (with a Kubotan, Dulo Dulo, Yawara or similar) or who want to get to know different aspects of self defense.

The S.D.S. (Self Defense Stick) is a small stick (see illustration) made of metal, plastic or wood, that is used in self defense training. It is 8-15 cm long and is mainly carried on a key ring or as a pocket stick. One of its advantages is its interchangeability with everyday objects like keys, lighters, pens, spoons, mobile phones, etc.) Sign Up

S.D.S.-Concept

The S.D.S.-Concept is a complete and individual self defense system, which combines a variety of self defense strategies that are applied according to situation.

It contains weapons techniques, survival- and defense strategies, conflict prevention, an understanding of self defense psychology and the functional combining of existing skills. It teaches awareness of targets on the body, the development of ideal movement angles and defensive reactions, footwork and mobility, various punching techniques, weapons use, improvised weapons use, pain-inducing controlling techniques and joint locks, knife fighting tactics, defense against attacks with a stick, protection of third persons, locking and controlling techniques, offensive strategies, direct one-on-one attacks, combination attacks, attack by baiting the opponent, attack with immobilization techniques, etc. - Apply here

Self defense tools

There are many tools and objects that can be used in self defense. A set table for example is a veritable weapons arsenal (keys, cutlery, chairs, etc.) Of course there are more obvious devices like stun guns, pepper spray, mobile alarms, gas pistols etc. None of those things are a guarantee for protection and should not give a false sense of security.

The correct use of a tool in self defense is vital for effective protection. Only if I know how to use the auxiliary device properly will I be able to protect myself without injuring myself.

The S.D.S.-Concept has evolved from systems like Krav Maga, Kali, Eskrima, Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun, Brazil Jiu Jitsu, Hashita and western boxing. However it isn't just a random mix of different techniques, but follows strict rules and principles.

The S.D.S.

An S.D.S. is a roughly 8-15cm long self defense tool, which is used in various martial arts. The origin is disputed, but is assumed to be in the Philippines or Japan. It has different names, depending on the style it is associated with. In Kobudo (meaning "ancient art of war") it is called a Kubotan, in modern Arnis it is a Dulo Dulo, and in Judo it's called a Yawara.

Essentially, the S.D.S. is a short stick that can be used to intensify hits and pressure application. The S.D.S. should be a few centimeters longer than the user's hand is wide, so both ends are visible when lying in a closed fist.

Pictured here are several everyday objects that can be used instead of an S.D.S. This shows that the system is not based on the tool itself, but on the principles and techniques, and the applicability to everyday life, and this is the deciding factor in the success or failure of a weapons system used in self defense.

Is the S.D.S. the same as a Kubotan or Yawara stick?

Basically it is the same (just like a pen, a small flashlight or a spoon can be). But the application, the principles and tactics are completely different and new. The S.D.S.-Concept is a complete self defense system with its own individual principles, training methods and execution. It is based on insights and empirical findings from the use of and defense with weapons. Simplicity is the important factor for the practitioner. For the instructor it is adaptability and the technical possibilities the system affords. The S.D.S.-Concept is structured into nine levels, for instructor and practitioner training.

Who is the S.D.S. an appropriate self defense tool for?

Thanks to its simple basic principle, the S.D.S. is perfect for anybody who wants to feel better protected in dangerous situations. Especially people who have previously felt inferior in a conflict or an attack, feel more secure carrying an S.D.S. and can very effectively use it after only a short period of training. It is a particularly adequate tool in women's self defense.

How is the S.D.S. carried?

The S.D.S. usually has a hole on the flat end, so it is ideal, handy and inconspicuous as a key ring pendant. With its distinctive shape, it can be found quickly in a bag without looking. It can also be held in the hand when walking down the street.

Anatomy of the S.D.S.

The S.D.S. is roughly 8-15cm long and has grooves every 1-3cm that prevent it from slipping out of the hand upon impact. The tip - "head" - is pointy on most models, the other side, the "butt", is flat and has a hole for a key ring. The S.D.S. is carried in the closed fist, gripped in the middle so that both ends are visible.
