Self defense is the avoidance of and defense
against an attack to the body or mind. An attack can be someone just being
inconsiderate or rude, someone invading your personal space or insulting you. It
goes on to mobbing, assault and battery to violent crime. Usually the aim of the
attacker is to exert power. The majority of violent attacks are committed not by
strangers, but by someone the victim knows (like a colleague or relative). If
the attack is non-physical, the self defense is now called self-assertion.
Combat or Fight Sports: those are sports with
rules, weight categories, separation by gender and age. It is measuring one's
own skills against an opponent while observing predetermined rules and
regulations. The sports aspect is the essence of it - the aim is to win, be
better than the opponent. This makes combat sports inappropriate for real-life
situations, where there is usually an imbalance of power and a lack of fair play
to begin with.
Martial Arts: traditional martial arts have
various aims. Tradition, dress and artistic movements play a central role. Many
martial arts - as opposed to combat sports - put a great emphasis on the
practitioner's character development and mental attitude. Asian martial arts in
particular are extremely ritualistic and linked with philosophical thought and
action. This is not a priority in classic self defense systems, which is based
on judicial principles.
Judicial Principles of Self Defense An
essential part of our training program is in direct relation to the Austrian
judiciary. The training content was developed in cooperation with lawyers,
police officers, teaching personnel and self defense specialists. The primary
goal is to ensure compliance with the law without neglecting personal safety or
effectiveness.
Do you think it is appropriate to
hit someone for grabbing your hand? See the law of self defense.
Conflict management and -prevention, adequate response,
de-escalation and self protection. Those are the key words in dealing with
aggression and violence. Combined with a new effective approach to the principle
of self protection this has been developed into a whole new method of self
defense and security training in Austria.
Our training program is geared towards equipping our pupils
with behavioral and defensive techniques that are supposed to protect them
during an attack - verbal insults up to a massive, life-threatening assault -
without breaking the law.
